In particular there has been correlations between oil content from flaked oats/barley etc, as well as an SRM dependence (makes sense as the darker the liquid the more light absorption occurs. I checked the results of his calculator vs hydrometer for a number of beers; the calculator is quite accurate: I compared readings on 19 beers, the standard deviation between by hydrometer and (corrected) refractometer readings is 0.0006.Sean Terrill hosts the refractometer calculator that I recommend. I think it's the most accurate of the calculators I've seen. If you're a math nerd, I encourage you to read the work that Sean did on his calculations to get his results that he based his formula on. My refractometer reads this solution at only a wee scant tick below 10 BRIX, and on the SG scale it reads 1.038 to the best of my ability to discern it. On the Sean Terrill website 9.95 BRIX = 1.0382 SG, so for this single test case case my refractometer actually appears to be reading rather decently along both scales.
My own WCF here is about 0.99 or maybe 1.00. Others like Sean Terrill report an average of 1.04, which I have not been able to duplicate, at least not for MY refractometer. YMMV. I have found 3 other equations as well to compare against from Terrill, Bonham, Gossett, and they are all reasonably consistent with small range.I picked up a hydrometer to take FG readings. Up to this point I have been using a refractometer only and trusting the Sean Terrill calculator to get me close to my FG. I used it for a few brews over the weekend and found that sometimes the hydrometer and refractometer agreed, but most of the time they differed, especially in the higher gravities.

Great I thought everything is right on. However, while putting my hydrometer away I happened to notice on the Brix side of it that 1.013 is less then 5 Brix. Could anyone explain why this is. OP, you forgot one thing. The SG scale is also off on that refractometer. I have the same one. It shows 31 Brix = 1.120 in the sight. That's way low. 31 Brix comes up as 1.128 on Sean Terrill's calculator, and even higher on some others. So, never use the SG scale on it, use his calculator, and you'll be fine.
